FLT Sandwiches

Here is a yummy twist on a classic sandwich.  We've been making FLT's in our home for years now, and we never tire of them.  Our animal-friendly "facon lettuce and tomato" sandwiches are definitely a family favorite and so easy to make.  So, you'll note in my ingredients list that we use two packages of SmartBacon; most families might be able to get away with one, but my group loves to munch on the facon while they're resting on a plate before dinner is actually on the table.  Also, the sandwiches are so light, that Hubs and the Blessings usually have two of them.  The bread can be untoasted or toasted for a bit of variety each time you make these.

FLT Sandwiches

Ingredients:

1 Tbs. canola oil
2 pkgs.of Lightlife SmartBacon
Slices of hearty bread, enough for your family
Vegenaise for spreading
3 tomatoes, sliced in rounds
Crispy lettuce - for this sandwich I like Romaine or Iceberg, torn into sandwich-sized pieces

Directions:

Heat oil in griddle over medium heat.  Saute the SmartBacon for about one minute on each side.  You can adjust cooking time to reach desired crispiness.   Drain on paper towels.  Assemble the sandwiches by spreading Vegenaise on each slice of bread, adding three "facon" slices, tomato slices and lettuce.  I always like to put tomatoes in the center of sandwiches, and that way they won't make the bread soggy.  Crunch down and enjoy!  Feeds five hungry vegans with enough for seconds.

  1. We haven't had one in a while but love these! We've used tempeh bacon the last few times & they were really good. We also add avocado. I could go for one for dinner!

  2. I'm a little annoyed with Lightlife (owned by Conagra) since they helped to defeat the GMO labeling referendum in CA. I really like their tempeh but will probably stop buying it and switch to a brand I can trust. Bummer. The sandwich looks good, though.

  3. Okay, I guess this is a new recipe, although it looks strangely familiar.

  4. Yum! I've been meaning to make something like this for a long time, but never got around to it! I need to get with it. :)

  5. Molly, can't go wrong with these. :-) I've made them with homemade tempeh bacon, too - I like them, but my children aren't huge fans of tempeh yet. Avocado sounds like a nice twist.

Andrea, I've stirred up such controversy!

    SV, It's new here, babe.

    Ingrid, yes, you do!

  6. Delicious, another favorite. I bet it would be really good with those fried green tomatoes!

  7. Speaking of bread, I came to your site while looking for vegan white bread. My normal bread uses milk and oil, both of which I'm trying to avoid. I made your basic white bread recipe from 2010. When I saw your recipe called for 2Tbs. Salt per bowl, I was sure it was a typo, but I made it anyway. You might want to check/correct your recipe if it's wrong. Bread came out beautifully, but too salty to eat....Am looking forward to looking around your site now that I'm starting my new vegan lifestyle.

  8. Erin, that sounds great! I'll have to give it a try.

TLeaves, you may adjust the salt if you like. Hope you find other recipes you enjoy.
